Yeah but the WB was going to be done up, injected v8, mags etc. I won't do that to a Sandman, I'll leave it original.

Just do it. It's not that hard to put in an injected 304 without doing anything that isn't easily reversible. There are plenty of original restored ones around , make it so you can use it the way you want. I'm going to put cargo drawers in the back of mine so I can use it to carry all my tools for work.
