Do you think this is a HQ sandman

    Hi,

I have had this windowless HQ van for about 10 years now, sitting in the shed at my folks house (in bits needing a resto). Most things point towards It being an original but the trim and paint codes have me wondering?

    Here are the plate details.

    08/74 EHQ57340A
    GVW 4850lbs seat cap. 2

    HQ80270
    121199-A
    1824-39B
    568-13118

    L31 M21 GV2

    8M70TDL281962Q

I am unable to give you any tyre placards or check for interior light wiring, as the van is inerstate from me at the moment.

It has all the GTS options, however it does not have the sandman logo on the stearing wheel. I know the previous owner, who owned the van from the late 70's, It had a black interior ever since he had it however the trim code is 39B which is the code for brown. possible mistake????

I could not work out if the paint is metalic or not, only that it was and still is red.

The other thing is, did all sandman HQ sandman panelvans have the little grill/vents up near the top of the driver and passanger doors? this van does not have those.

Hope someone with more knowlage than me may be able to help out with tis one.

    Cheers.

    Hi Troopybaz....

Looks very promising. Are you sure the paint isnt Salamanca Red 1824/1311 13138. That is a very popular colour in a HQ. The trim should of been chestnut.

    http://gallery.oldholden.com/Mr_Jone...Salamanca+Red/
    http://gallery.oldholden.com/Mr_Jone...stnut/Belmont/

Van is in the right time frame and ticks the boxes from the plates. It wont have a changed GMV and tyre plackard or the light switches in the door frames as all HQ vans are Belmonts and these options wernt included by default in HQ Panelvan Sandmans. The later HQ vans used the new steel pressing from the incoming HJ's and my Adelaide van is earlier than yours and no vents either.

A couple of indicators to look for are :-
. The rear console mount welded to the floor.
. The GTS wheel spare mounting cup under the rear.
. The GTS wiring harness under the dash.
. all black HQ SS grille.

We would love some pictures when you can and welcome fellow HQeeeyyy. Byron (HK1837) is the person to contact here to get a more extensive verification of your van.

    Cheers for you reply Mauser,

Yea sorry, I made a typo the code is 13138, salamanca red. Is that a Sandman colour? It has been resprayed red but unsure if it is re-painted its original colour.

I will have to take a better look into the indicators you mentioned when I see the van next, and try and scrape up a few photos of the old girl.

    Cheers!

As far as I know all colours were available on Sandman Panelvans and Sandman Utilities in the HQ range.
    http://gallery.oldholden.com/Mr_Jone...+A622.jpg.html

Where the metallic paint becomes relavant is that a HQ Sandman Belmont Panelvan or Sandman Belmont Utility could have the metallic colours that were normally reserved for Kingswood vehicals. There was a Kingswood Sandman Utility in the HQ range with all colours but uniquly all HQ Panelvan's were only Belmonts. The presence of metallic paint is not a hard and fast rule as there have been recorded HQ Belmont Panelvans with metallic paint outside the 1/74-9/74 date range but these would of been extreamly rare and probably come from a special order.

Your Panelvan having a "solid" colour is not unusual and doesnt discount it as being a Sandman at all.

Nice troopy, top dog HQ Sandman van, in a great colour.

I have recorded the another Sandman van with a PSN of L281260, it also has a Body no. 2 lower than yours but the Chassis no. is 34 different

    We love pics of HQ's

It could be a Sandman, but you will never know for certain by those ID plates alone.

If it still has its original body the seat separator mount (also used for rear console screw) is the only way to pick a HQ Sandman van.

Tyre placard and door switches are no help in HQ as Mauser has already said.

The trim has been changed at some stage if it is black. 39B is brown with bucket seats. Mauser, Chestnut is the Kingswood name, on Belmont 39 is brown.

I just stuck it in the database, and I have another Sandman, 2 x digits lower than this one in both VIN and BODY numbers. It has 39B trim too. It is 34 x numbers lower in the chassis number though and I think at Elizabeth this is a better indictation of where they were on the assembly line relative to each other. It appears that whomever was doing the rolling schedule for Elizabeth grouped cars by colour and/or trim so I bet the car in between these two in BODY number has 39 trim as well.

    Cheers for the info HK1837,

I will have to check for the seat seperator bracket. Did the belmonts with bucket seats not normally have a centre console? Or where the consoles fixed differently with no need to mount it to the seat seperator bracket?
Mauser mentioned the GTS wheel mounting cup, can you explain this in more detail? I assume you mean the sandmans had a GTS rim as a spare so the setup is different somehow?

Is it unusual to have a HQ sandman with a 39B trim? It seems unusual to me that someone would change the interior colour so early in the peice, however it was the 70's after all. Have you ever come across a mistake with stamping of the ID plates in the factorys at all?

All info is a great step forward, thanks,

P.S. out of interest, how many HQ sandman panelvans have you got record of?
