If the original engine was available I'd wholeheartedly agree. But by the look of it everything has to be procured for it, and it'll cost about the same to make it a V8 as it will a 6cyl, plus there will be no penalty if its sold at some stage in non original driveline.

The van comes with a 202, gearbox, etc, not the origanal engine but thde same date code and complete drive train... Being new to vans I can now see some of the attraction to these vans, they allow you to have a fun practical car that looks good and sounds good, a bit hard if the van has a six . I got all that from the 1977 interview on van culture on this web site , also little bit strange seeing two guys having a interview laying down in the back of the van back in the 70`s. Not the typical 70`s bloke thing, might of been a hidden agenda from GMH, anyway my choice of V8 would 350 chev.

A 350 would be perfect in the HQ. When you start, don't forget to start a showroom thread of your project... we are addicted to progress photos here.

I agree that a Chev is a good idea. However if you want a cheap, reliable and economical option a VN-VSIII 304 and 4L60/4L60E is the go. You can buy whole cars for $2k Bolt in using HQ-WB sump, pickup and mounts. Use standard HQ-HZ radiator and hoses and power steering pump/brackets. Box uses WB TH350 crossmember (narrowed for commercial), and TH400 speedo cable. HJ throttle pedal bolts in, Ebay has cable conversion bracket and cable to suit. TH400 shifter will operate the box. Only have a bit of stuffing around with fuel and wiring. And with a HQ you can replace the block with a HQ-J block and no Engineering or cats are required.
