    Sill / Body seams

    Wondering if the gap between the sill (Rocker panel) and the body (rear 1/4 panels) had some sort of factory selant before the factory colour was applied. While stripping back the van and repairing the sills there seemed to be some sort of white hard stuff in places under the paint in the joint.

    Its hard to tell as the paint and second spray job has done a great job of filling these gaps and now they are all clean they look deep and wide.

    Deffo some seam sealer in there. I had an HZ one owner ute and it was all old and cracked up

    alright, sorted will get some seam sealer in there. Thought it was strange to have such a deep crack with only paint to fill it

    Probably dripcheck, same stuff that is in the gutters and along the firewall-cowl joint (in front of the ID plates). It is a 3M product, looks like toothpaste and sticks to everything. From memory (did it 20 years ago) you squeeze it on and then rough it on with a wet rubber or plastic appicator. My mate used sikaflex on his Monaro rather than dripcheck.

    Must be the same stuff they blocked all the drain holes under the beaver panel up with on wb's

    Also it is in the join between the ute and van tray section, heaps of people don't put this back in during their resto and they end up rusting. Took me ages to scrape out/wire wheel the old cracked stuff. I think the stuff is hydrophobic (i think that's the right word) it will suck out any moisture in the joint on drying.

    plus its impossible to spray paint into the gap so the material will never be properly protected.

    I think you mean hydroscopic! Hydrophobic I believe means it is scared of water!

    Hygroscopic attracts water. Hydrophobic repels water. Hydrophobia is scared of water.
