Does it still have the strap from the 0V/-ve terminal to the radiator support? If it is there unscrew it at the rad support and clean under the lug where it touches the steel. If it isn't there put it back. This can affect the temp guage.

Just went for a drive. Taking it easy nothing too major and just as I pulled up in the drive and was sitting to close gates etc the temp soared!
Water started spitting out the top hose (probably not tight enough) and the welch plug. Probably couldn't get enough pressure to boil over. It is a cool night, the water pump hasn't been changed I'm thinking this is going to be the next thing to be swapped out.
