Most people these days don't have the smarts to do a bit more than just wash and polish the outside of a vehicle or the odd bit of preventative maint. Some can get through a bit because they may have grown up in a conducive environment to it.
Don't hold that against them, many went and did IT than an apprenticeship when they left school. This is more a reflection on the working environment than of the people themselves.
Society has shifted a bit since our parents and grandparents generation/s. Different values, different skill required to get on in life. No wonder a busy plumber, sparky or other building tradie can charge what they want. In a throw away society (albeit with many technical innovations making most self maintenance almost impossible) many have lost the skill set to be able to maintain every part of their car at home.
How hard would it have been to occasionally pop the access panels off the inside and have a quick squizz? Not very. My BIL is a great bloke, works in IT, has his own business in it etc etc..... But don't ask him to change some plugs, drop the oil and filter and a quick dent tidy up on his own (simple) car...
Then again, don't ask me how to diagnose a mainframe....
Dave.
