To do it correctly (fit a full bar) you need to use HQ lower tailgate hinges, HQ Wagon rear bar (or shorten a HJ-X-Z or WB Bar) and re-shape the bumper indent in the quarter panels.
HQ wagon bars look great with the WB Statesman large rubber moulds if you have the matching WB Statesman front. HJ-WB Hinges don't allow the bar to lift high enough, that and the fact these hinges are just plain ugly. Designed that way to allow the tailgate to drop fully.

Like anything, if it is fitted up correctly and done in such a way that it "could" have come from factory it will look great.
That said, factory got it all wrong right from the start with bumperettes on any model - YUK!

You must remember that the bumperettes go all the way back to the FE (I don't think 48-215s and FJs had them) and the reason for them was that the spare wheel door made it too hard to have a full width bar. The factory carried on the tradition with the HQ even though it was no longer necessary. I seem to remember FJs and 48-215s had rubber ones, or maybe they were an aftermaket thing.

    Dick,

Bumperettes were a genuine accessory on the 48-215 and FJ Utes. They were part of the NASCO accessory range and were always made of chromed metal. Remember what I write is just my opinion when it comes to the full length rear bars vs the bumperettes. Byron says no and makes everyone who has a full bar feel as if they have done the wrong thing (his opinion). I say you can have either, whatever you like. But then go on to say how "in my opinion" how to make it look right. I also stated that HQ bumperettes match the HQ front bar in styling. These same HQ bumperettes fitted by Holden to HJ-X-Z don't look right because the styling is different. Bit like fitting a EH Bumperette on a HD Ute or Van if you get what I'm saying.

You don't have to agree, it's not fact! It's my opinion and anyone with eyes can make of it what they see with them.

    Regards, Smooth

My dislike for them is because they don't really fit properly and hence don't look right, and i've never seen one done properly. This part is basically fact. I imagine with time and effort you could make one fit but it would involve cutting, welding and rechroming. HQ wagon bars actually look OK, but (and this part is my opinion) I like the bumperettes better.

I actually agree with Byron on this one and would rather have bumperettes.

However at the end of the day my van is just a daily driver hack so it doesn't get too much love in the looks department, well if you don't count from some exceptionally poorly painted rust repairs to stop it falling appart completely.

Still, its more exciting than the barina that was parked behind me at the show.

I want to see shots of that black van too. And the white HQ with red stripes look great.

Could be this tuxedo black one that was for sale a couple years back

That black van at the show the bloke had just finished painting it a couple of weeks ago to get it ready for it, it looked pretty bloody good ,sadly the poor bugger dropped a lifter on the way in and it went home on a tow truck. He did drive it off the oval and it didn't sound too good
