HQ - where it all began
Bring back the 70's!
HZ for me, only had great time's with my ute. It was also the last of the original series, and was good to drive long distances and around town.
Cheers.
"Proud To Be An Old Fart".
Got to be hz as the best looking model for me hq would be my least favourite ugly dash ugly front end but that doesnt mean i wouldnt own one
I'd go a HJ/HZ hybrid. HJ because of L31 performance and GTS guards, HZ for twin headlight front, better handling and stripes. Open to different colours as my preference changes but least preferred is white and yellow (sorry guys) - except the HQ, i like that in yellow! Jez

Got to be HJ..........but ya gota love a Q (I voted HJ)
For me it's HX and not just because my ute is an HX. The only good looking GTS guards are HQ, but I don't like the HQ and HJ Sandman stripes. I don't like the twin headlight fronts on utes and vans, this comes from being a teenager and young adult in the late 70's and early 80's, the first thing the wankers and wannabes did in those days was stick a Stato/prem front on their Holden or Fairlane/LTD front on their falcon, didn't like them then and don't like them now! That only leaves the HX, single headlight front and standard guards . In it's day the HX as a model, not just Sandmans, were not as popular as the other models as it was looked on as an HJ with a new grille and worse fuel economy, and not as pretty as the HZ with it's new grille and distinctive boot lid.
HQ Glacier White Belmont Ute
Wanted Lanspeed accessories for Holden Grey engines, twin carb manifolds, extractors, rocker cover, 3 speed floor shift.
I vote VY.
Why? Simple, they drive the better than any earlier one, don't have rust issues and myself being 6'5 I fit in the drivers seat!
Don't get me wrong I love early Sandmans, but I'm at the stage once you have seen one original Sandman from each model HQ,J,X,Z it feels like you have seen them all. I'm all for personalizing and standing out of the crowd. For this reason I would be crucified for modifying a proven genuine early Sandman. As a financial move it would also be silly to butcher one up.
With the VY and VZ for me there all Sandmans if they carry the 'HBD' tag and for this reason the Sandman name carries no significance in the vehicle other than it being a good taking point, away to divide the people that can't come to terms with the Sandman name being reused and for people that can't get there head around them being a van simply tell em its a Sandman.
cheers Jon![]()
Owner of one 2004 VY 'Holden By design' Sandman!
