early 79 Hz ute missing tags

    Hi guys,
I have just had a look at an early 1979 HZ ute. Unfortunately it had been stolen and recovered in the mid 90's and is now missing the Body Id plate and Model/engine/trans tag. It does have the ADR plate and states that it has a seating capacity of 2 and a GVM of 2200kg, and the chassis No matches up.

It has a small tag with some numbers on the key ring issued by police, but ACT rego can not tell me anything about its originality. On further inspection it does have a factory welded rear console mount and door jam light switch, as well as Yellow needle GTS dash.

Is there any way of telling if this ute is genuine by the Chassis no? AHZ05815B.
Any help would be much appreciated. thanks guys!

It might be a Genuine V8 Kingswood ute with optional U17 dash. You'll pick it by the side strips (or where they have been removed). It can't be a 1979 ute though with that chassis number.

Afraid not. 2200kg gvm makes it pretty unlikely but even if you could determine with some accuracy that it was at one stage a Sandman then all that value is gone with the tags missing. If you're going to buy it make sure you pay the same price you would if it was just any old ute with a GTS dash.

Thanks for your help guys. I ended up buying the ute on friday as it was far too straight to leave it. $2500 was a good pice I think as it came with a recently rebuilt 308 and th400 box. It has had the interior retrimmed in the past 10 years or so in black velor and is fairly neat. I have thrown a set of weld wheels on it for the time being until i can source a set of original GTS rims.

I pulled the motor and box out yesterday to give the ute a bit of a spruce up, and the engine bay was painted gloss black this morning. I am thinking of resprayiing it in Caribbean Turquoise and adding some DX5 stripes even if its not an original Sandman. I will post some pics up when i work out how to do so. Cheers Aaron

Here are some pics......forgot to mention that it is a single headlight front. Anyway i prefer them to the twin light prem front.

Look forward to seeing it painted and striped. It won't be a sandman unless it had a double headlight front end in hZ. Good to see another ute on the forum though

Looks pretty good for $2500. Apart from those ugly side mirrors.
