get some 1.5 mm {(2.5 mm x (1/1.5 rocker ratio)} shims and run them underneath your rockers. thats how i would patch it up.

OR run a set of roller rockers...

Chris, i think you may be getting confused as race applications are adjustable applications
Hydraulic lifters are suitable for Stage 1,2,3 and stage 4 + cams start to require solid lifters.

standard holden V8 settings are set to tight onto the head studs and forget about them. = non - adjustable..

Holden 6 motors HQ up had non adjustable.

Early holden 6 motors (big spark plug head) had adjustable rockers and a standard hydraulic cam.

so a Standard motor can have both adjustable and non adjustable, but a race motor would just only run adjustable..

They are the wrong lifters for the application.

"Speed Pro Hi-Rev (commonly called anti-pump up) hydraulic lifters feature a special high strength steel retainer used in place of the normal spring clip to precisely limit the travel of the plunger during operation. With plunger travel limited, adjustable rocker arms must be used to effect a lash adjustment of .000/.002''. This then allows the valve train to perform more like a mechanical system. Hi-Rev hydraulic lifters can be identified by the prefix "SPHT" and the suffix "R".

    Conventional Hydraulic Lifters
The lifters are intended for use with both OEM and aftermarket "stock" camshafts. Also recommended with hydraulic performance camshafts with RPM limitations of between 5500 and 6000RPM. Conventional hydraulic lifters can be identified by the prefix "SPHT".

That is the worst written piece of...
Basically, by replacing a cheap spring clip with a circlip, only now will you limit the plungers travel.
And what does that have to do with adjustable rockers or needing zero lash (or preload).

Anyway the manifold is back off and the lifters are out.

Race on the left, holden stock on the right.

    I couldn't help myself.
I pulled one of the "racing" lifters apart.
Again "R" type is at the front.
Looks like a standard replacement lifter to me.

Maybe they just put the wrong part number on the invoice???
The soft initial compression could have just been the lifters not bleeding completely when they were left submerged in the oil.

Ive rebuilt a few engines over the years and was under the belief that lifters should be filled with oil when fitting.
That was before a good mate and GM trained mechanic told me not to and the only a light oil was used when assembling the lifters and asembly lube applied to all components to protect on startup.
So yes in my opinion the soft inital compression is just an empty lifter.
Also filling new lifters with oil causes the valves to stay open , making startup dificult.leading to excesive cranking and oil starvation.
    Cheers Nath
