A lot of owners used to remove them and patch up the holes, same with the engine capacity badge.

Beg to differ Greg. My first registered car was a HJ Holden ex PMG panelvan with end gate badge (part No. 9933763) which was held on with two pins and two tubular 1/8th clips (part No. SP1606). The 'HOLDEN' badge was metal, same as the engine capacity badges, chrome outline to the letters and infill painted black.
I removed the badge, indented around the two holes and bogged them up, painted it with touch up paint from Repco.
The 4.2 and 5.0 engine capacity badges also have two pins held in with the same tubular clips.
Just checked the HZ parts manual and it is the same.
Plate - name 'HOLDEN' part No. 92011680 qty 1
clip - name plate part No. SP1606 qty 2
The end gate name plate and engine capacity badges were deleted on HZ Sandman and the RTS badge was re-positioned to below the tailgate crease.
