Seems we have a number of photography people around here!! Discuss anything related to the fine art of photography here...

I for one appreciate a great photo.....so maybe i can learn something along the way!

I'll start with a couple i took on holiday.....as for settings, I couldn't tell you what they were

Bit hard when you have to compress them, they lose way too much subtle effect, like the Temple of Athena is awesome in full size, the blue of the sky is amazing how it changes across the photo. Here are a couple of my favourites, portrait view of Eiffel Tower I had blown up onto a big canvas. Heaps more, I just selected a few. 3rd and 4th are Santorini, Greece. 5th is Temple of Athena on the Parthenon, Athens. Last is Dubrovnik, Croatia.

They look great, I know what you mean about uploading them on the site you need to drop the resolution - sorry not much I can do about that though :(

Fantastic locations for photos though were these on your most recent trip?

No, these were all 2010 when I visited Paris and the Loire region of France for a week, flew to Venice for a few days, got on a 2 week cruise around the Greek Isles inlcuding Dubrovnik, Ephesus (Turkey) and Naples, finished in Rome. A week in Rome, then a tour around northern Italy, finishing in Venice. Train to Zurich then a week and a bit touring Switzerland then home. Been to Singapore, Malaysia and Borneo in 2011 and Tahiti in 2012 since that trip, have some awesome photos from those trips too. Back to Hawaii this year!

Here are a few more, first 3 are self explanatory, last 3 are at the Intercontinental on Moorea, Tahiti. Last 2 were me playing about in near darkness:

Here's hoping that the 5D mark II photos are better again. All of the above were with a Canon 400D with an IS USM 17-85mm lens. Anyone can buy an approx equivalent camera now in a 600D for $599 plus an IS lens for about $850. Or buy a 60D package for about $1900, or a 7D with a 24-105 IS USM L series lens for $2300 (probably the better value package because of the lens being worth around $1300 alone).

I want to buy a filter for each lens, for protection mainly. What do you guys use? UV? Skylight? I had a polarising filter on the EF-S lens but it gave me the sh!ts having to keep spinning it for portrait and landscape shots.

I use a sturdy HD UV filter to protect the glass is good, most are Hoya brand but I do have a couple other knock offs too. I'm happy with them.

Thanks Blocker. I'll get some filters when I buy the 70-300 L lens, bag, cards and extra battery just before I go to Hawaii.

Nice Hong Kong city shot. Reminded me of some of my Singapore shots.
