Hi Just a quick question on a 7/74 Melbourne built hq ute, I have seen one with the firewall black, but my ute has the firewall painted in the body colour, not sure which is correct for my resto. Any help or advice woud be great.
cheers Vic

It is a work in progress sorting that out. Some 1974 Pagewood cars have body coloured firewall, but not all.

Thanks Byron, The 74 Sydney belmont Orchid van @ home has body coloured firewall as well, reasonably sure it is original, but who knows?
It is a bit of a mystery those HQ's from Pagewood. I've always thought late 1973 and 1974 Pagewood body plant bodies had coloured firewalls, but i've found a few VERY original later 1974 HQ's that have black firewalls. They almost look like the black is painted over gloss. These are definite untouched original cars, even still have chalk marks on the black! Both are Kingswood sedans. I think they are both 7th or 8th month '74. Earlier cars like 1-5th month '74 at least appear to be coloured.
Hi I had a chance to check my mates 8/74 Melbourne built 74 ute, it has black over the original body colour. I am a little confused with the reference to pagewood or were the Melbourne bodies built there ? Sorry for my ignorance.
We pulled the heater box back on this 8/74 ute and it was white behind the cover. The body i am using also has a coloured firewall but it's a 4/74. I am leaning towards painting mine in the body colour, but these are the kind of things i would like to get right.
Cheers Vic
I think Dandenong will be black but i'm not 100% certain. If the body you have has a painted firewall then it may be a Pagewood body and will be slightly different to a Dandenong one.
Both utes are tagged melbourne, Pretty sure they are both original Dandenong bodies, the tags appear never to have been removed from either ute. One has a coloured firewall 4/74 & my mates 8/74 is black but it's painted over the original white. But that ute has had the whole matt black treatment straight over the original paint on the whole car.My 4/74 is a very original vehicle and it has the coloured firewall ( thats what started the this thread ), Just painting it black on my resto would be the easy way to go, but this is the kind of detail that I would like to get right.

Hmmm. As I said it is a work in progress. Pagewood body will have a firewall number.
We were talking about this on the HQ Holden owners page on facebook and so far we have come up with these dates
for body colored firewalls.
Adelaide November 1973 to March 1974.
Brisbane October 1973 to June 1974.
Melbourne November 1973 to May 1974.
Sydney November 1973 to April 1974.
Interested in any feedback anyone may have on this one.
Cheers Paul.
