Sounds very much like a GMH Station Wagon chrome roof rack which was very common to fit to a Panel Van.
These are the nicest way to go if you want racks. Still wanted by others and worth something to someone if you want to sell.

Some fitted with luggage rails others simply fitted the rail cage.

hello asked a wrecker and he said that the panelvan roof racks are different to the station wagon ones , they are shorter . so i would say it was and after market option on the sandman . looking at the one the wrecker had it has flat bars and a square rack with chrome legs.

All '70's genuine versions are the same. That said; they can be shortened quite easily, tube and rails can be cut at the joins and end caps fitted to the rails. You would never know.
The roof racks are a dealer fitted genuine accessory. They didn't leave the factory production line fitted.

Not 100% correct, they weren't a dealer fitted genuine accessory, they were an aftermarket accessory that was fitted by a number of speed shops in the day. In fact they were much more prevalent on XA and XB wagons and became popular on Holden wagons later. There wasn't one produced particularly for the panel vans and if you google the Mad Max van you can see that the feet are angled steeply to accommodate the curvature of the roof. From memory you could shorten them by cutting the side bars but you couldn't narrow them as the cross bars were run through a mandrel to make them oval and they also had a bow in them. I had a set that I wanted to put on my EH van but the curve of the roof was too great and the centre of the front and rear bars touched the roof. I find it amusing that there has been a set for sale in the last week on one of the Sandman facebook pages and there as well as on oldHolden.com has been a lot of discussion about them.

Holden had a lot of optional accessories back then including dealer fitted water bag carrier and Terry Towelling seat covers.

The problem with them is that you're only likely to sell them to someone who already has them and they maybe want a better set. Not many people are willing to drill holes in the roof of an old Holden anymore if there are none there previously.

There is no risk aftermarket version existed along with many Jap options. I'm talking genuine GMH Accessories supplied by Holden at the dealership and fitted by the dealership.
We (myself and mates) fitted many from the wreckers off Holden Wagons to our Panel Vans through the '80's and '90's. We'd go to get sill covers and roof racks off the Wagons. It was a common customisation.

BTW: I owned a Speed Shop back in the day!
