Bring it on! Pictures and details, you sound like you might have a leading contender.

Sounds like a nice HJ. Do you have details for it?

The Opaline blue HZ that was in the Echuca museum was a very nice example in terms of originality and condition. It had one thing going for it: it was a ute. But it was otherwise a HZ and a 253, so it might be a finalist but unlikely to be a winner. What are we all going to do if a totally unmolested example comes up, perfect in every way and something like <50,000kM on it? But it is a 173 M22 with four wheel drum brakes! Can a car like that be the best?

It would then be "Best of it's type" and in contention for Worlds Best Sandman.

In original and unmolested condition absolutely!! As long as it is a genuine Sandman, of course you would probably have a Van and Ute category, that would be expected. Similar to the GT National's, you could have a car with all the bell's and whistle's, then a pristine bare bone's example appear's, and take's home the trophy. That's what it's about!

I actually knocked back a really nice HJ XX7 Sandman van a few years back, it was a one owner beauty condition wise. But is was a few things I didn't want: It was a van, it was green with Fawn trim (1905-64V), 202, M22, 3.55 with 4 wheel drums. Totally original, no windows, just a dent in the roof. It was only around 5-6 years ago, and it was like $2500 with rego. It ended up getting wrecked out when the owner had a sale for the front and the doors. I ended up with the tags off it. I think the body got crushed after a few rust repair sections were taken out. Shame really, but no-one wanted the poor old girl. If I had bought it and left it as is it'd be a contender, it wasn't as good as that Opaline blue ute at Echuca but not too far off it. If it'd have been a V8 I actually would have grabbed it and tried to swap it for a Sandman ute in similar condition. If it had have been a ute I would have bought it and changed the driveline and probably repainted it a nicer colour.

Byron, Aren't front disc brakes included with the 202 engine option on Sandman? Think it might have been a 173 with a M22 box and drum brakes.....
