How else can you hold your beer, smoke and steer without having to remove your only hand from the wheel to flash oncoming traffic?

There is one thing you can't beat about either model, in both the HQ and HZ you can have the heat set on your feet and open the drivers window 2 inches, this makes your feet toasty warm and sucks the heat up over your body yet leaves your face cool and avoids making you drowsy. Not like the POS VE, every time you turn the fan on the MONGREL A/C comes on. Whoever designed the ventilation system in the VE should be taken out the back and shot!! I hope the VF has a more user friendly heating/cooling system. Holden needs to go back 40 years to see what a good HVAC system should be.

Easy, be sensible and don't smoke!

Other than my old '57 Chev, every GMH product i've ever had as a daily driver with stupid dash mounted wipers and floor mounted high beam i've converted to a HX-HZ combination switch. This includes HJ's, HQ's, LX etc. I'm not going to touch my HJ Premier or HK GTS's of course, but it'd drive me mad having to operate the wipers and high beam other than on the column.

^^I agree, HX LE's are awful cars, HQ is much nicer. I'd have a HJ GTS coupe before a HQ with the same engine, but if it was a GTS350 HQ it'd get my vote!

In the late 80s when I was doing my HQ coupe up It had no front panels So I installed a Hj statesman front clip, I didn't like the HQ dash and still don't ,I went and installed a wood grain hz GTS dash. I admit I do have a soft spot for the HQ front.

geesus, looks like you guys are pretty polarised about various H series but this was about wether a HQ v8 with metalic paint was worth restoring as much as a sandman?

It was an overwhelming YES it is worth restoring if it is as good as you say for 5 Grand. It doesn't matter that it was factory metallic paint or even factory V8. This isn't really adding any value as it isn't a Sandman.
If it's good and you want one, buy it. Don't get hung up about it's paint type or it's factory engine type/size. Build it as you like as your not ruining a Sandman collectible.
Of course if you decide to restore it to factory spec's, colour, engine etc that's cool also.
