    Thanks for that info i would never have thought they would be different,so i will have to keep my eye out for a 308 out of a HJ, plus i have nice set of L34 heads to go on one.

    As you can see, I wan't telling the truth as I said HQ's are ugly as well! (to be honest I was doing my best to imitate Alien and Glacier!)

    I wouldn't take much notice of what they are out of today, as when you rebuild them just do it as you want. Apart from the gearbox bolt pattern there is bugger all difference between 308/304 blocks from HT right through to the end of them in VSIII, nothing that matters too much for a rebuild to put one in a carbied HQ-HZ. Some of them even have proper date codes for most of Sandman timeframe (ie 1994-1998). The point was if you could pick an original spec engine the HJ one is the one you want.
