It defintely was GMH's first toe in the water with some sort of race special idea. The engine itself though was the same as the other 179's in that is wasn't a performance option engine, the extra performance came from the fact it was a manual and the only other EH's in 1963 with a 179 were autos as the standard crash box couldn't handle the 179. Being blueprinted shows you how serious they were to try and make the things last in race conditions. The extra performance of the HR 186S 4spd isn't all engine either, the 3.55:1 diff had a lot to do with it. That coupled with 13" tyres makes for pretty low gearing.
I've got all the literature on all the earlies, unfortunately everything was recently put away into storage because we are about to put our house on the market and had to de-clutter.
Whatever the case, neither were rockets. A couple friends of mine own S4's, one has it sitting in the Mt Panorama museum the other in Thirlmere.
You are right, neither set the world on fire. The HR being almost as quick as an XR GT must have made it frighten a few V8 cars in its day, until it spat its Opel box! Imagine owning an XT GT or even an early XW GT, and having Dave Bennet's HR Premier keeping pace with you between the lights?
As soon as the gt hit it's straps, it would blow the HR off the road. The gt was the complete package,it achieved what it was built for.
"Proud To Be An Old Fart".
Dave Bennett's HR was 2 seconds quicker to 100mph than a stock XR GT. So there would be no blowing that HR off the road! The XT GT was tested at the time with the same 1/4 mile time as the XR but was 0.8s quicker 0-60mph than the XR so the XR was actually quicker than the XT over 60mph to the end of the 1/4 (XR: 15.8s 1/4, 9.7s 0-60mph, XT: 15.8s 1/4, 8.5s 0-60mph). Bennett's HR was basically equal to an XW GT in straight line performance. The XR GT was built because Ford got wind of what was coming from Holden, and it wasn't good enough - it got trounced two years running at Bathurst by the Monaros. GMH had some serious Monaros built and tested and if they'd used those rather than the little Toranas in all likelihood Ford would never have seen a GT sedan win Bathurst after 1967. You'll all be able to read about these cars one day!
Here is a quaint and pretty straight-shooting article about the 186S HR:
