All EH's with 179 had a HP cast block and forged crankshaft - HP simply meant 179, same as HP meant 308 on early 308. All red 6's up until early 1967 has a forged crankshaft. I'm almost certain an S4 engine is a stock 179, but it did go harder as it was the only EH in 1963 to get 179 and manual. This manual box was a beefed up version, simply introduced first on S4 but became standard for 179 in 1964. I just found the S4 specs:
Standard 179 engine.
Upgraded (194 spec) 3spd manual and bellhousing.
Stronger clutch (than 149).
Bigger tailshaft.
Nodular iron diff case.
Altered carburettor (for manual).
Vacuum brake booster.
Sintered metal brake linings.
Improved brake shoe retaining springs.
Bigger fuel tank.
Basically the A9X of EH! ie a homolgation for better brakes, better diff and heavier duty gearbox. But not a pefromance engine as such like the 196S HR or LH L34. Good enough to get 2nd outright at Bathust 1963 though. Almost everything on the EH became standard production on 179 manual EH's.
The S4 was basically a carefully blueprinted standard 179, hence the 5-7 (or so) extra horsepower. Don't ask me why I remember this but have a feeling the S4 was realeased with a more comprehensive tool kit in it for the Production Car racing rules of the time. Something about having to be able to fix the car with only the tools supplied by the manufacturer in the vehicle when sold.
Dave.
