A night spent in the back of a car is often out of necessity, convenience, for thrills or a right of passage.

The experience can be endearing or tedious – think cold morning air, fogged-up windows and dishevelled hair. But it is usually always memorable.

Most Australians can vouch for sleeping it rough in a vehicle at least once in their lifetime. Some can even lay claim to being conceived in the back of a car.

So in honour of those circumnavigating Australia or planning a budget trip to the snow, Drive has assembled a list of the five best sleeping cars.

Spent many weekends in the back of my hz kinga down Margaret river with my then girlfriend who now is the wife
we didnt go down there just to surf either

My girlfriend loved the crushed velvet in the back of my van..... so i married her

Although the handcuffs hanging from the the tailgate hinges didnt score me any points with her parents

Yeah they were good days rob when you could park down near the river mouth
try doing that now
There was always a funny smell in the car park at night time to must have been all the sea WEED lol
