A truck driver who saw two men engulfed in flames following a crash near Sydney Airport grabbed his fire extinguisher and raced across six lanes of traffic to put out the blaze, firefighters say.

The men, both aged 33, remain in St George Hospital in comas following the fiery crash on General Holmes Drive in Mascot about 4.30pm on Sunday.

Mystery still surrounds the exact circumstances of the crash and how the fire ignited in the white panel van.

Detectives are waiting to interview the men, who suffered severe burns to their heads, faces and hands, when they regain consciousness."
