HELP! Starting Problems with Blue 253

I am totally at my wits end with this POS!

It starts intermittently on the key. Starts and runs when you push start her.

    Ive
    Replaced battery earth
    swapped starter motor
    replaced plugs
replaced dizzy cap and rotor button

its strange. it will start on the key and then you switch it off and it wont start again and other times you can turn it off and on as many times as you like. HK has suggested ignition switch which will be my next stop but i'm wondering if there are any other suggestions. i don;t like the idea of dropping the column and messing with wires. i seem to bump or break wires pretty easy. A mate reckons that coz its a old clunka that the lifters are likely to be sticky and its not getting enough compression to fire. Lift the oil filler and its a bloody dirty sludge fest in there :(

some suggestions would be warmly welcomed

Does it click the starter solenoid or do nothing at all when u turn the key?
Lifters don't affect compression. They stop the valves opening at all. If the motors real sludgy it will more than likely have lobes worn off the cam shaft though. That does not sound like your stating problem though.
    I am with HK. Key.

What vehicle is the blue motor in? One it was designed for? the blue electronic dizzy needs 12 volts at all times the IGN is on. Is the dizzy a bit loose (earth)? An electronic ignition module and pick-up need a good earth to operate, so make sure it is clamping down at least firm. I'd be looking at the ign switch, the dizzy module (common) and pick-up (not so common) and other basic stuff like wiriring and coil condition.

Is the accelerator pump on the carby working properly? Check for a decent squirt of fuel out of both barrels when you crank the throttle with the engine off. Is the choke flap working correctly? There isn't much to stop these old girls to be honest.

Ignition switch is easy, once the column is dropped down undo 2 x screws and unplug the plugs. You just have to adjust it up again right so that the rod operates it properly before doing the column back up.

carby works fine. there is never any clicking to indicate a starter problem. its a factory v8 ute so i doubt its been messed with too much. dizzy is not loose but i will check wiring to it this arvo. getting plenty of fuel. the choke flap is always closed until the car warms up and it opens. is this right?

i hate those rods too. i had an HX with a busted ignition that you had to start by pushing the rod down.. it still gives me nightmares

i tried swapping starter motors, no love. a mechanic i know put his money on the starter as well. reckons its common that the starter draws too much power and the motor wont crank fast enough to fire... is that BS?
