Bit of a contentious issue! I like the idea of restoring a car the way it was originally built. I plan to keep the body, paint, interior trim, wheels etc all as per the tags. I see no reason to change any of this - there's not many better looking cars out there in my eyes. However, there are many nicer engine and gearbox options than a 253 with Aussie 4 speed. Nothing will be done that can't be reversed easily. I've always wanted a big block van that looked totally standard. The LS engines seem like a good option though especially the eRod kit GM Performance are selling. I had a HJ van when I was an apprentice - a white base model with 253 4speed which I painted Windsor Blue and currently own a nice original Atlantis Blue Kingswood Van with factory L31, M21 GTS dash and full headlining. It's still mostly original paint....
