I guess I qualify...
I never seem to be in the right place/time, but I was real lucky when it came to getting my van a few months back.
I'd been looking for a good van for the past 10 years and all the local blokes with nice cars knew it, but vans are pretty rare down my way. A few months back a mate called me and said he'd heard about a windowless van in good condition and gave be a number to call. I rang it and an old bloke answered and I asked him if he had a van for sale. He had a van, but it wasn't advertised for sale. I talked to him for a while and he mentioned he'd had it since new, it had never been in an accident and had almost no rust..........
I asked him if he'd consider selling it and he told me to drop - in and have a look at it. It was only an hour away, so the wife and I jumped in her car and floored it!
We got there and it was under a carport and looked pretty good, a bit of light surface rust and a bit in the door bottoms, but it was pretty good. I opened the bonnet and there sat a 253 with air-con and still looked like the day it was put in. I got in the front and pulled out the ashtray and it was brand new...never been ashed in. The original purchase documents and handbook and service receipts were in the glovebox, along with the 1st two rego papers.
I started it up and it just sat and idled, revved clean, odometer said 218,000ish kms and that agreed with the service papers.
I REALLY wanted this van!
So I asked him if he'd sell it and he said he would, but he wasn't going to give it away...... he'd like to get $3,000.00 for it!
And the rest is history, it's lived up to it's reputation and I was finally in the right place at the right time.![]()
