    Identifying an engine

How do u know what month and year an engine was made. I know it has something to do with the first 2 numbers after QT on the block, cast clock and 4 digit cast number.

I can tell you roughly what month/year car the engine was installed in, but it has not much to do with the numbers after the prefix, the next two are actually more important. The cast date tells you when that date was put into the mould for the block to be cast in, but doesn't tell you when the engine was assembled (could be 1 week to 6 months after the cast date, normally a few weeks though).

With the info u guys have given me i found a block what could go close. 15M6 cast number. my van is 2/77 built. Would it be any benefit getting this block or not bothering so much to get the van close to original as possible?

15th Dec 76 is a pretty good cast date for a 2/77 car but the engine number on the block is more important, give that to Byron and he'll tell you how close it is. The closer the engine number is to your vehicle build date the better.

Considering the foundry and engine shop would have been closed for a decent period over Xmas, that's a real close casting date for a 2/77 build van I reckon.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

I wouldn't bother, just use any QT block, doesn't matter how close to correct cast date it is, it is still as wrong as one cast in 1971 or 1980. If you can find one close without too much hassle and expense go for it, but don't knock back a cheap QT of any timeframe that suits your application. There is only one correct engine and that is your original.

Yay for that response Byron. I think looking for an engine that is close is silly when the only purpose is to call it a matching number car. The norm was for these cars were to be driven in for a Gem/Repco etc engine swap. If you are going for a date nut and bolt resto then maybe but it will never be a matching number car.
