I'd like to think that Don is capable of both using the net and making his own decisions. Arguing over engine/gearbox opinions here doesn't help him. Offering advice should be the end of it. The constant squabbling between members gives me what I get when I eat prunes.
Each to their own. It's enough to make you lose interest in the site and venture out on your own and figure it out yourself.

Don, Fantastic news that there is a terrific piece of Australian Motoring History in the States. Good luck with the resto. I'm keen also to see your journey.

they're rare because back in the day no one wanted a bright orange panelvan or ute... Bright colours were out of fashion by the end of the 70's..... They are back in fashion now because everyone thinks they are the colours of the 70's. + fashion goes in circles and it has come full circle..... Old is new again.

Totally original the way GMH intended. That is what people will be blown away by.
    It's not like it's a poverty 253ci, Tri-matic. L32/M40 tagged combo.

But as already stated, your Sandman ruin it if you like. It's all yours to do with what you what.
I'm not suggesting that Don can't make his own decision on the point I was making when I offered my opinion but let me put it another way closer to Don's heart.
Let say you have a quite rare model A or model T commercial. You pretty much have the only one in the country and it is all factory original with matching numbers.
The motor is in pieces though uncommon to you. So because of that you decide to fit a Ford Pinto motor in it with a turbo! It just doesn't sit right.

I would also say that this car is ruined.

OK, so that might be a little extreme but I hope you can see my point.

Dons opening statement was that he is starting a complete restoration of his Sandman - not too much more to say really. There are plenty of great people on this site that will surely help him achieve his goal of an Aussie classic, however long it takes. Good luck Don, keep the pictures coming as you go through the restoration.

I think he bought the adapter before he contacted the forum so now he has some contacts and idea of what he has. Maybe he will rebuild it to original, be a bit harder but their dollar is back up so won't be that dear. An engine is the same all over - so to recon and rebuild is no biggy. Don't worry it could've blown an engine before it left here and fitted with a 253 for all we know so check the engine no. and chassis no. First as we all know plates could've been changed years back before it went then it's the same as it is here just a neat old van paint it and do what ya want in the end it's his to do it anyway
