License in the USA it is both a noun and a verb, in England and, traditionally, Australia, License is a verb as in to give license or allow. Licence is the noun as in I have a licence to drive.
Thus I have a licence yet I am licensed to drive, in the original context when used to describe a license plate, it is actually correct. This is in spite of the fact that we have registration plates in Australia not license plates. Is everybody totally confused now?
Having read the above I am now unsure if it should be a licence plate (being a noun) or a license plate (verb). Does the plate signify that you have been granted license to drive the car on the road, or is the plate the licence which gives you license to drive the car on the road, assuming of course that you have a current licence and are licensed to drive!
