Yep as Innuendo says the stuff you eat. Have a look at the thread "dash Cleaning", 10/1 ratio to water and the results on rust are to say the least amazing!!!!!

Molasses won't take the chrome off though will it? That will have to come off. Of you are re-chroming the whole wheel will end up chrome won't it? Then you will have all sorts of drama with paint not sticking.
I would forget about chrome. Paint them. Chrome wheels were always the cheap option anyway. They don't last.
Although the old 13" chromies on EH's etc looked good.
Molasses will eat rust, if there is rust under the chrome it will lift the chrome. If this is the case then it is a good thing. do the molasses, then nappy san , then pressure wash. I have been so impressed with the molasses bath I have located a IBC (1000L) container to form a new bath. If nothing else it will loosen up the paint . chrome etc to make it easy to get to the base metal.
If then they need a sand / soda blast, then it will be easy.
You should also be able to look at the bead area to see of it has been eaten away.
A light sand once dry should give you a clean base to work with.
I have been told, ( may be true or untrue) that VIC is the best place to get chrome done due to EPA laws in the other states.
That's what the old man got on his boat trailer set of 13 inch mags
Yep Calbert that is what set me on the molasses path. Have a look at the thread dash cleaning
And a work mate showed me this.
