Looks more of a satin to me but happy to be wrong. I'll see if I can remember to get a pic of it tomorrow.

GMH engine bays were painted with black slops/slush it wasn't gloss or satin although it can come across being either.
The paint is basically GMH chassis black and any slops that were returned to the pot (all colours) so the colour can vary from black to grey, shiny to dull.

Cars yards would clear coat to tart things up for sale (even new cars). Typically this clear coat was straight over the top of everything (hoses and all).

GMH sprayed gloss clear over the whole engine bay starting in late HQ (once HJ volume production started). I've seen 9/74 HQ's with the HJ onwards gloss clear. It was over everything as Inny states. It was done in the finishing area of the assembly plants as far as I know.

Yeah that's it. You can see why some think it's satin and others gloss.

yes, bonnet hinge springs are black on HQ through to HZ.... Not sure about WB. A lot of people overlook them when restoring their car and finish them in zinc plate like the rest of the hinge.

AFAIK most 73/74 Pagewood HQs had a body-coloured firewalls. The inner guards & radiator support were still black.

They then went back to black firewalls for HJ/X/Z.

I've got 2 original HQ sedans in my shed, a Glacier White 72 Premier which has an all black underbonnet & a Saffron (Orange) late 73 Kingswood with a body-coloured firewall.

Pagewood HQ went black again Terry around mid 1974, but black over body colour.
