The issue with the VZ/Y Utes with the optioned HBD canopy may be the fact that they were never vigorously marketed by Holden for anyone to know about them. They may be low in numbers but lack of knowledge to but a few people even now will always hamper them. The reason that older series Sandmans are popular now is only due to the fact they were popular 30 years ago. The people paying for them now are the same people who bought them new or wished they had.
I think maybe Maloo utes will be the future collectable commercial vehicle. Maybe to all the people who also had them new.
Possibly the VZ/Y ones may be more of an unusual orphan.

Yeah that is a fair call. But nothing changes the fact that if you want a modern equivalent to the 70's offering the VY/VZ is the answer. The lack of knowledge is not dissimilar to what it was in the 70's with any of the offerings. Be it Sandman, Torana, Monaro or even the special release limited number stuff like the SS, Gemini Sandpipers ZZ/z, Torana G Pak etc.

Don't underestimate the amount of people who would own one if they could or the kids that stood in awe at the 2000 motor show looking at the Mambo Sandman for hours upon hours.

Anyway as usual it's each to their own. I'm just putting an argument up with what I feel is a realistic opinion on what will be a future collectible and the reasons why now is a good time to purchase.
That and the reason why the Red Book value has no real bearing on todays' market prices.

Shouldn't redbook have have a history ? Check what a sandman as worth after ten years or more don't imagine they showed much value .

They probably do and I may even have a few old ones kicking around. But the problem would be that how would they know what a Sandman is? People today don't even understand and have all kinds of problems working it out. Thus the reason for this website and forum. More likely just to be only listed as a Holden Ute and Panel Van. That's why I say "The lack of knowledge is not dissimilar to what it was in the 70's with any of the offerings."

Of course if it had a huge bloody sticker kit on it (real Sandman or not) with the words Sandman people would call it a Sandman anyway! You would be better off comparing SL/R Toranas or SS Hatchback pricing over time. Of course replicas/mock versions of these were prevalent also.

Yeah I don't have a crystal ball. Just making a guess really.

Price guides are useless for any unusually popular vehicles. Go back to 1994 when WB Kingswood utes pulled $8-10000. The book value was $4000 based on what 6 cylinder 3 speed ones were worth. That's over a 50% difference. You had to get agreed value for insurance. They were still reasonably current then. Only 10 years old for an 84 ute. But book values didn't see somewhere like the Orange Ag college car park. There was no other type of car there. And so it went across most of rural Australia for young country blokes.
Now you can't get bugger all for a WB because the current trend is to say they are uncool and you have to have an older style front clip. Go figure. I think the VZ are going to get hit with a price drop because all their standard brothers and sisters are becoming daggy and that will drag them down.

I would beg to differ on the wb, some people on this site dont like wb nose but when was the last time you saw a tidy original wb, I have been offered offered 5 times what I paid for mine, anything original in good nick v8 holden over 30 years has a pretty reasonable price on it.

'Bout 2 hrs ago. There's an absolute pearler parked just down the road.

I had a good one. Factory V8 Kingswood with factory GTS dash. A mate kept bugging me to sell it to him and his offer was too good to refuse.

It weird how it goes. Back in the day everyone tried to update there HQ with a J/X/Z or WB front or HJ/X/Z with WB Statesman nose etc. It was the thing to do, fit a Statesman/twin light front, WB taillights etc. If you have a HT you would make it a HG and poor old FE, EJ and HD were frowned upon by the owners of FC, EH and HR's. Today HK is cool where as it was considered old fashioned when compared to HT-G. The fact I got into FB/EK's was because just about everybody hated them when I loved them. Meant I could buy them for very little. Today though the opposite is true they are very popular.

I think VY and VZ will pretty much say on the same price level it will just comes down to condition and kilometers. But my preference is the VY nose.

Fashion hey! So useless it changes every 6 months.
