    In regards to heads:
The VN heads (that i currently have) don't use 2 bolt holes in the valley of the block. (usually has 2 short bolts).
So is it possible to run early heads on the motor and not use these 2 holes, or is there a specific reason for these 2 bolts?

You don't need those 2 bolts, throw them away! If you use those 2 bolts make sure you only tighten to first Nm level otherwise you break the thread away in the block. I know i broke my block. When I said to my engine builder OOPs, he just said throw the bolts away. That was a 400hp 308 in a Torana and never gave me grief, well no issues with the bolts not in anyway.:geegee:

I broke mine too and had a perfectly good 308 sit in the shed under a blanket for three years until I was told. :errf:

Adam is correct, HT and HG inlets are different to HQ-HJ but only by a hole for a heater hose - that is what the blank boss is on the water runner coming from the passenger's side front towards the thermostat. If you look in the picture you can just see the round boss above the thermostat cover. As this one isn't drilled it is a HQ-HJ or LH-6/76 LX manifold.

I know this is an old thread, but it hasn't been answered yet.
Simple answer is a no - the exhaust crossover ports are different (and so are the bolt holes around them).
