70's Wheels and Modern Motor magazines

I stumbled across a new secondhand shop (oxymoron) on Saturday which has piles of 70's and early 80's car magazines in awesome condition. I flicked through them for a half hour or so and grabbed 6. Great articles about vans called 'vantastics' and a van meet in Berwick Vic in 1976, and awesome old ads and features. A couple of the original full A4 size HJ sandman ads and the HG 350 great balls of fire. Really awesome condition magazines - I'm going back for more!!

Good for you, something you just can't go out and buy. They all look in great condition.

Yep, that was Brian Rowe's on Parramatta Road, THE place to check out custom vans.

My mate and I used to stop and look at the vans every Friday night before we headed around the corner to "Brickies" for the street drags.

Brian sold so many vans that it was rare to see one for sale that had been there a week!
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

It's hard for people after our time to realise just how big a scene vans were.

The little QLD country town I came from had a van club!

We even had ute and van show up at the show ground that made some people oooohhh and aaahhh but then made others grumble with disapproval!

    I'm getting misty lol

So true. Vans were so big that you would never be anywhere where there wasn't one or two in a carpark. And everyone knew everyone with a van....

I knew the owner of every custom (mild or wild) van in my area. If you were broken down (often!) a fellow vanner would stop and lend a hand. I made a lot of friends laying under a van fixing a diff or uni joint, or getting a flat tow home from a bloke I'd just met.

    Now I'm getting misty......
