Being a HQ it will have 5mm thick spokes. The horn cap will have the Sandman badge but be warned these are being repro'd and being passed off as original.
If this one is the one off the Ute and the condition is excellent you should secure it. But it's value is around $400 to $800 and it would have to be very good and original.
Make sure the ring itself isn't broken and that the wheel sits flat on the rim on a flat table etc.
Jezza the ones I have seen at that price are the gts badged or plain on the horn cap not with sandman across it.
Innuendo, it was the original and not the repro, just in good nic and yes was the thicker spoke. The last one I saw go through ebay was around $1000 so I thought he may of been close but now im not to sure but I told him not to part with it on me, either way I would still like it on the ute but I need to work him down on price a bit I think.
Mmmm. We have a gts wheel with sandman written on it. Came with our hx ute and as we liked it left it on, instead of changing to correct wheel. Now I know it's value will treasure it more

It isn't the wheel that is the really hard to get bit Jennie, it is the insert in the cap. Early wheels are good to have though.
Picked up two good 5mm at Ballarat this year with good grip
With the wording, Sandman across the horn button hqhzvans?
As I stated the badge is easily obtained

Sure it's reproduction but this insert fits any of the horn caps that typically have the GTS, SS, or GTR insert (which you can also buy new).
If it is a real original one then it adds value to the steering wheel. A real good 5mm wheel secondhand is about $300 to $400 and with a genuine Sandman horn button you could add an extra $200 to $300.
But as already stated would have to be really very good.
New old stock Bridgestone steering wheels pull just over the $1,000 mark depending on the day.
Proving its a genuine Sandman horn cap would now be impossible wouldn't it? There was no GMH marking on the badge was there?
No mate one with GTS badge and the other with GTR but who knows they could have started life as a HQ Sandman steering wheel we are talking 40 year old cars, if I was you and you were doing a concourse restoration I would be buying it even if it was above the market price, if your not going to anal with your resto well it probably changes things and comes down to your budget, if I could buy a NOS for a $1000 I would probably buy it because I am trying to do it close to as original as possible I am happy with the two wheels I picked up and will keep my eye out for a NOS.
