    Priming and Painting ADVICE

Hi all. Loving this forum as motivation to start my first car project.
Just wanted to get some opinions or advice about stripping but more importantly priming.
My "AIM" or plan originally was to (after rust repairs) take one side of the van back to metal (or at least a large portion of one side) then spray it with primer (purely to prevent more rust) and move on to the next part, until i was ready to take it to the painters.
My questions are: 1. Did that make any sense?!
    2. i didnt want to sand the primer but just protect the metal until painting (wanted painter to sand so its at least decent). Is this silly?
    3. What type of primer would be best to use?
    4. will the overlap of primer on primer (where i begin the next patch) affect the final result?
    5. when priming on bare metal, smooth or rough surface?
Just wanted any advice before i ask these questions to the painter this week.

    Cheers

First thing, where will the car be stored during stripping? Closed garage, carport, under a tarp?

    1. Makes perfect sense, many do that.
    2. Not silly at all either
    3. I would probably choose a rust-proofing paint over primer, as primer is porous and moisture from the atmosphere soaks through and can cause rusting to start under the surface.
    4. Shouldn't do, unless the area of overlap has not been properly cleaned before application.
    5. Smooth surface. Primer does not need big scratch marks to adhere. A once over with progressive grades of sandpaper down to 240 grit will allow it to grip just fine. This should also help get rid of any ugly scratch marks from a scraper used on paint stripper or a wire wheel.

Personally, on my HZ which is in an enclosed garage, where I've stripped back, I have sprayed on WD40 and wiped away the excess. This has been protecting the bare metal from rusting for the last 15 months roughly with re-application every 6 months to make sure it does not wear off. The benefit of this is that it simply wipes off with prepsol as part of normal prep before painting.

Hi, hope I'm not high jacking a thread but I'm doing the exact same thing and was after some product advice. Does anyone have a preferred rust proofing paint and advice on cost? Being a Sunday with shops all closed I did a quick look on Google and found:
KBS rust seal for $76/L delivered or
Rust Bullet automotive anti rust & corrosion for $150/0.9L delivered.

Are either of these better then the other or should I search out an alternative product? Thanks

I'd check with your painter for product recommendations, just to make sure it won't conflict with other products he uses.

With 70's Holdens, I reckon that going back to bare metal really justifies a rustproofing undercoat before the primer.

I recommend the Rust Bullet, its different than anything else as far as I can see. I used it, great results, I havent used the KBS, but if you look at the Rust Bullet comparison test its pretty convincing.

I am gonna put a Rust Bullet thread up soon, would have been this week, but I have found that I have lost some of my before and after pics, I cant find pics that show all of what I was going to talk about, I'll try and get some sort of thread up tonight,
