I had my HB on historic rego and have my LJ currently on it. Rego per year is around the $50 mark, and comprehensive insurance per year is around $80. Big savings to be had if you're willing to follow the rules.
As for the club side of things, it varies club to club due to the self regulation. It's entirely up to the club how they work their CRS, minimum attendance to meetings/runs, modifications, maintenance runs, roadworthy checks etc. Of course, people will try and take advantage of this.
The club I'm a member of is pretty good. We work on a points system where you accrue points through the year for attending club meetings and runs. 50 points is the minimum to stay on CRS, though they are flexible (within reason) if you can't get there. It's suprisingly easy to get to the required points too.
Minor mods are generally allowed, but nothing to extreme.
I know all clubs are different, but (at least in my club) the politics side of it is completely optional, as it should be IMO. I've been on the committee of my club, but if I wanted too I could ignore that side of it.
For me, the best part of it is the social aspect. A bunch of like-minded people together for our shared interest, be it on a run (the overnighters go alright, the pub loves our money lol) or just helping out a mate or whatever. The CRS is just a bonus.
EDIT: wbute, your WB would most likely get through here too. And I agree 100% it should be the driver who's covered by the green slip, not the car.
