I can only assume because of the radically different engine to the red L32/L33 as they had a 4BBL valley and carby. I assume L35 was for the low comp 4.2 if it was used for export at all in WB. Also assuming L34 was used for the low compression 308 in Bedford and hence why L35 was used first for the low comp 4.2L engine in Bedford as both of these existed prior to VC or WB.
3.3HC changed to L14 as well, not sure why the 3.3LC stayed as L23 or why the 2.85HC stayed as LD1 but the 2.85LC changed from L21 to LD2.

There are many inconsistencies in Holden's engine option numbers, but the ones that I remember are the Red 253 in a VB Commodore is L36, but the same motor in an HZ was L32. The Red 202 was L20 in HQ/J/X/Z but L14 in VB . So the number didn't change at Blue motor intro.

Another one is the V6 in Commodores, VN to VS was LG2, but VT to VY had it as LN3. You would have thought that the number would have changed for the VS Ecotec.

Also the 2850 Lo-Comp was LD2 in Toranas but L21 in the HQ/J/X/Z.
