I installed the gas injection on my 80 series 1HZ. And it totally transformed it. Heaps more power and economy. But still has trouble towing my boat up hills. The 100 series with a FTE engine and gas would do the job. I have heard the earlier v8 had bottom end issues.

The v8 cruiser utes at work had issues with motors. To be honest they have less get up and go than the turbo 6. But my mate borrowed his fathers twin turbo diesel wagon and said it really was light years better.
When pulling big bogie axle trailers out of the pit (6km steep haul road) all you can smell is clutch.

You know what I mean. The myth that aside from resale (generated largely by the myth) and aside from those with access to diesel subsidy, in Australia that owning a diesel is cheaper than the petrol version. In almost all cases where the car is used for normal driving and normal annual kM most people will never save the extra purchase price in fuel saving, and this is magnified in many cases on used vehicles. As I'd said in the original post, if a 4.2TD was available in the same condition and price as a V8 i'd buy it as it will sell better later. But they are at least $10-15k dearer, and they don't drive near as well. I get why many people want the diesels, my next door neighbour has a 2006 4.2 VX and he does over 10.000kM of towing a year all over Australia with a big van on the back. Others do serious 4x4 work and the diesel is better at this. But for me who does less than 15,000kM a year of which maybe 2000 max is towing the V8 (or V6 in the Hilux) is by far the superior choice in running/owning cost, driveability etc.

They were only diesel V8's in the utes unfortunately, but after sitting in one I doubt I could put up with one, they are awful to sit in. Plus for some unknown stupid reason they are manual only. Marks 4WD have developed a heavy duty auto conversion for them at about $10k fitted but they will be popular for the exact reason you mentioned.

Not to mention getting diesel all over your hands when at the bowser! That gives me the irrits lol. Or all over your feet when you have your safety things on lol.
I know what you mean. I lost interest in petrol when they removed lead. I loved seeing how well your car was running after a long trip. Nice grey pipe. No one will remember that in a few years.

That is the reason why I walked away from an ix45 for my mrs and relented on the RX350. The best ix45 to drive is the diesel, but she is an executive type so can you imagine her putting diesel in it in executive suit type clothes? No chance, i'd be filling it up and I never drive it!

Hilux isn't like that though, you pay $2000 more for the diesel and you get an inferior gearbox. By the time you add up the extra servicing costs of a diesel and extra cost of fuel it worked out for me around $250 or less per annum cheaper to run the diesel. That is 8 years to pay back the difference, and you have to suffer the lack of power and a far inferior gearbox. In the end it was a no brainer decision to buy the V6 petrol, but it was the auto box that tipped the scales for me. When it comes to the used market I cannot fathom why you'd buy a diesel auto Hilux, the V6 is such a bargain. If they were the same price new as they should be, and both had the A750F auto then maybe i'd look harder at a diesel. As good as the V6 is, it still needs some $ spent though to get it to go better, but the diesel is the same - they respond to a better exhaust and a good chip.

In the end the V8 EFI 'cruiser is a bargain too on the used market, they've taken the price hid bad and at $30k or thereabouts for a 7 year old less than 100,000kM unit I don't think there is anything available that compares. You'd be silly to buy one new unless there was some sort of tax benefit to it though. I saw a really low kM 2005 Lexus LX470 today with about 80,000kM. Nice looking car. $25,000. That is insane value.

Edit, as I mentioned above if the D4D was available with the 5spd A750F i'd look harder at it. Just realised the 2014 spec Hilux has the 5spd auto behind the diesel. And a new SR single cab 4x4 D4D auto is $35k driveaway with steel tray. Hmmm.

Now I need to find a used one in a yard and test drive it, see how it feels. I might hate it!

Hey Bryon why do you think it cost more to service a diesel how so
the only thing i change is oil and filter every 5000 yes i know i can get 10000 before service but a service cost me $88 i supply the oil & filter and air & fuel filter every 50000
i do buy my oil and filters in bulk another saving when your running 2 diesel 4WDs

Diesels are dearer to service, plus it is silly not to do oil and filter on them every 5000 as you say as it is the best thing for them. I'm only talking $3-500 or so pa, not much but it does eat away at the fuel waving benefit.
I'm still going to give the SR single cab D4D with A750F auto a good look though. I can use my 17" wheels on it, plus all the A750F accessories, sheepskin seat covers, Eclipse unit and reverse camera etc as I have all the original stuff off mine to go back on if I trade it. One of tose with an alloy tray would be lighter than a dual cab too so may not be as sluggish as the SR5 diesels i've tried.
