If you go by the book there are a couple of $800 services. 70000km and 120000 I think. They are valve adjustment ones and there are fuel filters that need changing every service. They are dearer to run.
I try to save by doing all my oil changes my self. But with my wife doing 40k a year and me doing 30k a year it adds up. Both are D4D motors. The old Prado we had was the same. All together we have done about 350000km in D4D powered cars/ute in the last 6 years. Haven't had any issues yet, except rats chewed the wiring in the engine bay on the old Prado and caused some issues.

i do buy my oil and filters in bulk another saving when your running 2 diesel 4WDs

Diesels are dearer to service, plus it is silly not to do oil and filter on them every 5000 as you say as it is the best thing for them. I'm only talking $3-500 or so pa, not much but it does eat away at the fuel waving benefit.
I'm still going to give the SR single cab D4D with A750F auto a good look though. I can use my 17" wheels on it, plus all the A750F accessories, sheepskin seat covers, Eclipse unit and reverse camera etc as I have all the original stuff off mine to go back on if I trade it. One of tose with an alloy tray would be lighter than a dual cab too so may not be as sluggish as the SR5 diesels i've tried.

I've seen the Toyota service costs, they are dearer. Plus i'd be doing 5000km oil and filter on the diesel. Petrol with synthetic I do at 6 montly interval, so at 15000km per year that is an extra oil and filter change on the diesel which is about $100. Plus as mentioned above there are some big services $ wise with the diesel that you don't see with the petrol.

6'5". Will have to try it. Tray is too short from memory on an extra cab and they are as dear as a dual cab.

I prefer the 80 series as a 4wd and updated my old 90 model 3F petrol to a 97 model. I briefly considered buying a turbo diesel but after driving one opted to go with the 1FZFE petrol auto with LPG. More power, revs better, tows better and no smelly oily Diesel all over your shoes and hands every time you fill up....

97 80 series GXL factory turbo diesel with over 300,000 Kim's on the clock... $25 to $30 grand. I got a 97 petrol auto GXL never been off road, 220,000 Kim's with gas for $7000...... $20,000 buys a lot of petrol...

NSW and Qld are ripped off when it comes to LPG... When we left Victoria in July last year gas was 59.9cpl... We crossed the border into NSW and it jumped up to 94.9cpl... We crossed the border into Qld and it was 89.9cpl. Petrol was pretty much uniform at around $1.44pl and diesel $1.57pl.

friends with the turbo diesel get around 18L per 100klm towing a large van and I get 25L per 100klm on gas towing a large van.

Byron, why do you say a diesel is a better 4wd than a petrol? The only place I have found a diesel has an advantage over petrol is on down hill engine braking.... Petrol is far better on hill climbs, far better in sand and far better on muddy tracks.

I have driven and towed with a V8 petrol GXL 100 series and they are great for towing, pull well up most hills even with a large caravan, I just don't like the independent front end on them for serious 4wding. The LX470 Lexus is brilliant but far too much electronics for me.

Mainly because if any crap gets into the injectors it's an $8000 dollar repair. It happens. I put a second filter with a water trap on as well. Water is the absolute enemy of the common rail.
