Hilux isn't like that though, you pay $2000 more for the diesel and you get an inferior gearbox. By the time you add up the extra servicing costs of a diesel and extra cost of fuel it worked out for me around $250 or less per annum cheaper to run the diesel. That is 8 years to pay back the difference, and you have to suffer the lack of power and a far inferior gearbox. In the end it was a no brainer decision to buy the V6 petrol, but it was the auto box that tipped the scales for me. When it comes to the used market I cannot fathom why you'd buy a diesel auto Hilux, the V6 is such a bargain. If they were the same price new as they should be, and both had the A750F auto then maybe i'd look harder at a diesel. As good as the V6 is, it still needs some $ spent though to get it to go better, but the diesel is the same - they respond to a better exhaust and a good chip.

In the end the V8 EFI 'cruiser is a bargain too on the used market, they've taken the price hid bad and at $30k or thereabouts for a 7 year old less than 100,000kM unit I don't think there is anything available that compares. You'd be silly to buy one new unless there was some sort of tax benefit to it though. I saw a really low kM 2005 Lexus LX470 today with about 80,000kM. Nice looking car. $25,000. That is insane value.

Edit, as I mentioned above if the D4D was available with the 5spd A750F i'd look harder at it. Just realised the 2014 spec Hilux has the 5spd auto behind the diesel. And a new SR single cab 4x4 D4D auto is $35k driveaway with steel tray. Hmmm.

Now I need to find a used one in a yard and test drive it, see how it feels. I might hate it!
