hi all,today I drove our HQ van and although it has a good pedal it doesn't have good brakes like the monaro,it really feels like it has grease on the brake pads and was worse when we put the trailer on it.I found a receipt for a recond brake booster in the van when I bought it and it has new rear wheel cylinders but still has bad brakes,doesn't seem to make any difference how hard you press the pedal.Any help or ideas would be appreciated thanks
Is the booster working.
I test mine by pumping the pedal a few times before starting the engine to vent any vacuum then push on the brakes and start the engine , as the engine pulls a vacuum the brake pedal should creep to the floor slightly.
The other possibility is the slides on the calipers have stuck or seized (quite common).
Another possibility is a stuck piston in the brake master cylinder . If the front dips when you stab the brakes the hydraulics are working.
Just a few things to try
Yep, All the above. The back brakes don't do much, so it's the front calipers you need to be looking at I reckon. Pull them apart and throw a seal kit through them and check the pistons are not askew in the bore. Could be the master cylinder too, so a kit through that wouldn't hurt either.
And of course, a new set of pads will help a lot.

It would also pay to replace the hoses that go from your calipers to the chassis...

Thanks Frosty,but I couldn't sell you a van with bad brakes,and thanks everyone for your replies.It looks like it needs a new booster, seems to be a common thing for me,I had to change the booster on the HJ when I bought that too,not a job I am looking forward to
If the booster had a leaking diaphragm the engine would be running like crap because of the massive vacuum leak. Check the vacuum hose running from the intake manifold to the booster. It could be all balled up inside giving you a really hard pedal.
Replaced the hose on Saturday,van is running well
