I recall The Angels were described as "the hardest working band in the country" around their heyday, - I think it was Meldrum who said that - and I think he was probably right, tour after tour of regional towns and cities, not just the big shows, I dunno how many times I saw them, at least four or five, always guaranteed a top show at any venue. Best for me was NYE at ANU Refectory with the Radiators when I was about 16 (god knows how we got in!!) that was back when the ANU bar really used to rock.
8 years later they were playing Griffith RSL, I was seasonal fruit picking at the time and was organised to leave town two days before the gig, I wanted to stay just for that, but we had to go, I always wished I'd seen that gig. Doc Neeson leaves a huge legacy for Australian music, and I think thats something he realised and was proud of. Rest in Peace.
OK so back to Doc Neeson.
Back in the early 80's I worked as a photographer for a couple band management agencies, I went to a music festival at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, bands like Dragon, Australian Crawl, Mi Sex, Kids in the Kitchen, Pseudo Echo etc. The stand out were The Angels. I still remember like it was yesterday Doc grabbed his towel and wrapped it around a fans neck and was chocking her, she nearly went blue!
They blew my right ear drum out at a gig in Bunbury WA in the 80's. Every time I hear that tinitus ring in my ear I remember that gig.
Australian Story did Doc in April. He didn't look to good then.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert.
Gday Burd. Yep Great White did a cover of 'Face the Day'
They have 2 best of albums, which were called the Angels Greatest, and the Angels Greatest volume 2.. Imaginatively enough!
As above though, you can also get hold of the wasted sleepless nights compilation which comes as a DVD too! Its all good.
Get a hold of their Night Attack album too if you get a chance. One of their best and most underrated albums!
