    Bugger, is there a difference in a roller engine and non roller engine thrust plate thickness.

    Dunno. The shop tested my thrust plate in another 2 x cams (Crane) off the shelf this arvo and it wouldn't fit them either. This is a thrust plate from a VR SII 304 and its about 300000 km old. If anything it should be thinner than when it was new, yet it was too fat for the new cams. Funny thing is that it fitted the old Holden cam perfectly. Its a mystery...

    Ok, so the shop helped out with another thrust plate and it fitted...so jumped back into the build. Haven't resolved the plate mystery but bigger fish to fry at the moment. So got the cam and timing chain fitted, then started to roll the crank over to check lift...WTF? It stopped dead again! Discovered that the crank now hits the hi energy sump, man this thing is fighting me. Guess its time for a hammer. Pics as usual;

    So i think the windage tray needs to be cut up a bit as i appear to have 5 x conrods touching it. Wouldn't mind some input on this. How much should i cut out?

    It’s a bit hard to see. The tray looks like it tappers very close to the bottom of the dump at the last spot that is hitting.
    I reckon that sump is just wrong. Did they know it was going on a stroker? I have a photo of a VN Group A sump. The windage tray is flat across the sump. I don’t know if they had enough clearance for a stroker and you would never find one anyway, even if did fit HQ-WB.
    I have a book called the Holden V8 Engine Manual by Larry O’Toole. They cover strokers and give a lot of detail. I will quote what they say about sumps; “Windage trays and crank scrapers are not considered necessary on these engines as they will usually see mainly street duty”. I reckon unless you can find a windage tray sump with enough clearance, you would get away with the standard one. Unless you are going to really get in to it I guess. I would be scared of dramas if you cut and shut the one you have.
    But I am sure there are more knowledgeable on the subject than me.

    The windage tray on the group A doesn’t go as far along as the one you have to. I wish I could put a photo of it up.
    You would nearly need to shorten that tray back by a third to get clearance at the far end by the looks. It looks like you need to bash a dent right through to the bottom of the sump that you could see from the other side.

    Thanks wbute. I read your info from the Larry O'Toole book and that sounds fine to me. Decided to cut it all out, across the floor of the sump. I just left the oil scraper and side of the windage tray, kind of like a second oil scraper.

    BTW, here's a pic of the Commodore sump that came off this engine (VR SII). It seems to have windage trays as well.

    The engine in my SLR is also from a VR (club sport) I just used a standard HQ-WB sump and pick up. (no scrapers or windage tray) Its rare that I spin it over 5,600 rpm for any length of time. I haven't had any oil surge or problems of holding to much of the oil in the top end. If I was using it for track work and consistently running the engine over 5,800 rpm then I would invest in a sump with windage, side gate flaps and scrapers.

    I also use Shell Rimular X 15w40 it just doesn't seem to give any problems that some other oils seam to give when under a bit of stress.

    A windage tray is only to stop the oil sloshing away from the pickup on hard cornering isn’t it? They would have gone to dry sump in touring cars back in the day but rules prevented it?
    All EFI from VP had a windage tray according to same book. The Group A one had a baffle for the “special” pickup apparently. It looks much the same as the one Axister put up though.
    Looks like the best option to just cut it out

    Thanks for the info. Its made me very comfortable with cutting the tray away. Anyway i've dropped the sump back on and no more touching. Woohoo!!!! Got the bottom end all locked away now so good steps today. Started dropping lifters and pushrods in, so time to play with the top end. Cheers

    So i'm now cruising on the engine but got another one. Do i use the cork gaskets for the intake manifold? I've heard that you throw these away and use goo instead?
