    Ok, so its time to start the 355 engine assembly. Started yesterday arvo with block, crank, piston and ring measurements. Had to get a tutorial on plastigauge, but ended up simple enough. All measured up well, so best i shoot off and pick up a gasket kit for next weekend...

    G'day Damian, got a chance to have a good look through your build thread today and noticed your post in relation to accessories drive system. Of interest I have converted my 304 efi engine to serpentine drive belt with air con and power steer. Its in my Torana but may help with your setup. One serpentine belt drives my A/C compressor, water pump and alternator (6pk belt). And the second serpentine belt drives the type 2 Saginaw pump, also 6pk belt. works exceptionally well nice and quiet and no slippage. Its much tighter to get it all to fit in a Torana than a WB but might give you some ideas. I purchased a serpentine pulley kit listed for a 350 chev (long water pump) from summit racing and was easy to adapt it for the Holden engine. I also used the original compressor bracket from the done VS clubsport commodore. slightly modified it to suit the Sanden pump with 6pk pulley.

    Hey Lenny. Thanks for the post and advice. The Torry looks great and very interesting how you used a Chev belt kit on the 304. I have the Whipple blower kit going on so will look at incorporating everything for a clean accessory drive belt finish. Also, for the WB i had to upgrade to rack and pinion steering to get the A/C compressor to fit in its original location, but its not a bad upgrade to do anyway. Should end up well and we will see if it all comes together in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Damo

    Ok, had a few days off over Christmas week so got some more progress on the engine. Installed pistons and rods but ran into some real trouble when a #2 conrod bolt touched the block. Shit, nearly dropped my bundle, but luckily i took a teaspoon of cement (got some advice) and did some surgery with a carbide burring tool. Crisis over and the crank and pistons are in.

    Realised i could then drop my heads on, so quickly placed them in position...and then sort of realised i could temporarily drop on my manifold...just to check if it would fit...

    Ok, so i pushed further along on the holidays. Finally sorted out a camshaft and decided on a Crow Cams hydraulic flat tappet unit. Even though i scored the roller cam block, I couldn't bring myself to up the cash for the full roller cam setup. Anyway, i thought i was on the final leg of the engine build with new cam, lifters and timing chain set at home. Got set up today and jumped into it. Twenty minutes later it all came to a screaming halt...again!

    I had the new cam lubed up and in after following the instructions to double check everything and clean everything. Was looking good and i could see a fast run through timing chain assembly, lifters, pushrods and rockers, but no. Went to install the camshaft thrust plate and it wouldn't fit! After a lot of measuring and checking the old camshaft, discovered that the new cam had a different size on the thrust section than the original unit. Back to the shop and found that neither Crow or Crane cams would fit the thrust plate i have. Dont know whats going on but waiting for the shop to do some research on Monday morning. Ah well, time to start drinking...again!
