The engine in my SLR is also from a VR (club sport) I just used a standard HQ-WB sump and pick up. (no scrapers or windage tray) Its rare that I spin it over 5,600 rpm for any length of time. I haven't had any oil surge or problems of holding to much of the oil in the top end. If I was using it for track work and consistently running the engine over 5,800 rpm then I would invest in a sump with windage, side gate flaps and scrapers.

I also use Shell Rimular X 15w40 it just doesn't seem to give any problems that some other oils seam to give when under a bit of stress.
