    Lucky Find

    011.jpg

Went to the Finke Desert race the other week. Cruising around the Territory saw a couple of old cars in a heap. Went and had a look. Couple of FB's and EK's. All still fairly complete. All the chrome work (door handles and bumpers etc) all in amazing condition. I wish I had room in the ute I would of been able to bring a lot of it back as the property owner told me to help myself. The only car that had been burnt was an EK wagon. I was about to walk away when I saw the tail gate was up. The struts were in perfect condition. I reckon I'll be able to change the bottom mounts and fit on my van.

There are a lot of cars still like that still on private property well away from the road in central Australia.

The cattle station I lived/worked at on the Lasseter Hwy in 2002-3 had the wreck removal contract for the local area with NT Roads, plus also being a bit of a tourist stopover in its own right many cars over the many many years the place has been running have gotten there never to move again. Some of these places have vehicle bone yards that would out do many city wrecking yards for volume and variety. Gaining access can be difficult as many land owners have been "burnt" by some people previously. All you can do is ask!

One of my wife's ex-workmates from Kittle's in Alice looks after the NT Govt vehicles fleet and is regularly out and about around the Pitt Lands (Pitjantjatjara land across the top of SA/bottom of the NT) and he regularly finds real gems out there that other folks without that access to aboriginal land would never find. He's a Val/Chrysler nut and that has served him well for his spare time activity in his massive shed at home in Alice.

    Used to love Finke weekend!

I found heaps of parts for mine in cattle station and Aboriginal community dumps in and around the central desert area. Problem is a few years ago a team went around with a portable crusher and removed umpteen road trains of crushed wrecks. There is a mythical car dump in the Utopia region but I've been there and it's all rusty rubbish but it was interesting seeing so many classics even if they were buggered. Chargers, panel vans of all persuasions, utes and old trucks.
Nah, I'm just driving around looking for someone with licence.
