So a van/ ute that does not have XX7 on the plates can be called an XX7

It is a Sandman, not an XX7. XX7 is one of the option codes used for the Sandman special vehicle package. There are basically 2 packages:
Sandman (option codes XX7 (pre 10/75) and XU3 (post 10/75)).
Sandman with passenger tyres (XX7 post 10/75).
Same way a HQ SS sedan is still a HQ SS sedan regardless of whether it has XV2 on the body plate.
Just so you know "only Brisbane built" Sandmans have the option code XX7 or XU3 etc on the tag.
All Sandmans built at other plants didn't mark the tags with these option codes. That's not to say you couldn't have the option pack, it's just it wasn't stamped on the tags.
Sandmans from plants other that Brisbane are just as much Sandmans the ones from Acacia Ridge/Brisbane without the ease of tag identification.
Just checked and she's definitely a GU4 rear axle, had the other stump pullers so pretty happy with this. I see its listed as the "economy" axle with 253 / 4 speed on the literature and being a country car always may have been why?sandman ute 3.jpg
If I could work out how to attach an image I'd stick the tags on here![]()
Very rare! 3.08 was the standard rear axle for HQ and HJ L32 M20 commercial, but changed to 3.55 in HX and back to 3.36 later in HZ. I only have 19 x HZ in this combo, and only 9 of those are cars recorded off tags. I have 84 in L32 M20 GV4 and 243 in L32 M20 GV7

I remember when I bought the WB 253 Kingswood in 84 it was 3.36 GV4 as standard and GV7 3.55 as optional - can't remember if 3.08 was even an option? Went for 3.55 as I was pulling big floats back then - great for that but used to cost a fortune to run - needed an extra cog as I was living in Geraldton running back to perth each week - wouldn't make it on a tank with no load.
Hi Folks,
I'm looking at a van but don't know if its a sandman or not, I had one when I was younger and to this day regret selling it.
Thanks

You'll need to show all tags. From what you have shown it's not very likely but it's not yet ruled out.
I'd be sticking with the VY personally, but I understand the draw.
Hi,
Here is the only other plate I've got sent to me.
See first post
In this case it is 100% NOT a Sandman.
The next time you ask you need to supply all (3) tags and chassis number for faster/easier conformation.
Don't forget to use the mysandman.com.au resorces
