Hi andyG, It does sound like you've had a bad week man, feel like posting any pics? (Up to you, of course) It doesnt sound good from your description but I'm thinking how bad is it in the lower A pillars round the door hinges?, and, is it both inner and outer sills? I think thats probably the difference between considering it maybe do-able (at a hassle and expense) or not at all.
A point made on this site a in a conversation I was participating in while back was that you wanna enjoy your Sandy! I reversed my consideration of giving a member advice that its do-able to take on a big rust job, in that thread (Im still in the middle of two big restores now). Tackling a huge rust job does definately, for the money, and the time, disbalance the fun side of the equation compared to what you'd pay just starting again with something better. The bottom of those A pillars below the door hinges and the join to the sill are pretty important structurally. They sound key to me.

    1) DY2
    2) NO... Why clear coat over a solid colour?
    3) Why are you putting GTS guards on a HZ?

    Thanks Absinth,
    1. Will buy DY2- Thanks, they were my preference.
    2. I thought a clear coat would give my paint a bit more protection in Central Queensland
    3. Only now realized they didn't come with GTS Guards, youv'e saved me some money as my originals are OK, How about the doors- mine are ugly and I thought it would be much cheaper to replace them.
Thanks for your reply- I'm loving this site.

If your doors are rust free then repair them, good rust free doors are hard to get and not cheap. Clearing over colour won't help protect it, in fact I think there is nothing worse than seeing clear coat peeling off a bonnet or roof. Just keep the polish up to it once it has cured properly for good protection against the elements.

i personally hate the idea of clear over solid. it makes no sense. There is binder or some clear or other shit already in solid colours. yes it may make the colour look better but 2k on old cars already looks soooo out of place that you wouldnt want it any shinier or brighter than it comes off the gun anyways imo

What about metallic cars then? They must all look wrong?

That's why a number of people still want acrylic paint, for that factory finish.

It's all in the way you finish it, acrylic can be given depth and shine like it's liquid plastic, so can 2pack, it's just about knowing (and bothering, trust me it's a lot of work with 2 pack) how to apply and then finish each paint type.
I've heard many old school painters talk about mixing clear into acrylic flow coats to gain extra depth, Likewise you can use more layers or clear over base with 2 pack in both solid, and metallic colours to gain depth.

In my opinion, you cant beat paint film thickness to give depth to a paint job....... that goes for 2 pack and acrylics.

The HQ ute will be 2 pack, and depending how that turns out, I'll make a decision on the paint I use on the sandman, both are solid colours.
