I have heard there were a few vans usd as supportvehicles for the rally. I do remember HDT providing some from their GMH dealer principals and at least one belonging to a HDT employee. A column shift TH400 LSD van would be an obvious choice for the task. Far more leg room for the occupants. And it'd be a standard vehicle out of stock. Why would you use a dearer and far easier to sell Sandman for the task?
You would'nt use a Sandman for that, so by the numbers its a Belmont with a twin headlight front end. Yes?
No, not a Belmont but a Holden van.
Everything about it screams NOT a Sandman. not sure why everyone keeps thinking it is. It has 67C trim, column shift and no headlining strips.
The story is full of holes too. Box most likely will have been a TH350 not a TH400, it would have had alloy rally rims not "GTS" rally rims.
Support vans weren't for Brock, they were for the 3 (later 4) rally cars. Brock was a driver in one car.
funny that said hello to bev brock tonite at the shops will see her again will try and get some info and a kiss as well
Your'e on the money Flamingo, it's about the story, or the story behind the story. As far as the van's go, the factory would just build what they wanted, henceforth the column mounted shift. They would have been built very strong, mechanically and structurally, to enable them to get to the remote area's required. Basically area's more suited to a four wheel drive at the time. My guess is they were built on the production line as special order's, to the requirement's of the rally participant's. The whole team were representing GM, so you can't have the support guy's breaking down.
Cheer's.
"Proud To Be An Old Fart".
There are photos of them all together. Some have gts mirrors, so possibly a Sandman and some were just standard mirrors. I think they used whatever was available. They weren't all the same. There is a thread on here about them.
