There is a thread on here already if someone can find it. Old mate was building a replica of the vans. I think there was a story in AMC too. I remember reading about them sitting on high speeds to stay in front of the rally cars to beat them to the check points.

I remember that thread too WBUTE, and there was a pic of one of the vans with a HZ GTS front apron without the spoiler (i.e suggesting that it had a spoiler wiped out)

Rallyvans own thread. The van here is most likely a sandman judging by the wheels and black outs.

That one has brown/tan trim and I agree it does look like a Sandman at first glance. So if it is it is pre 10/78 build as it must be 67V trim. Otherwise if it is a later car which it probably would be if specially built for the purpose as the rally was in August 1979 it can't be a Sandman, unless the trim was changed. If it is a Sandman more than likely this car was in plant stock and grabbed by John Sheppard for the rally. If it isn't a Sandman it could have been ordered and built for the purpose.

I have spoken to George Shepheard's son about the van pretty extensively at that start of my replica build process. He can remembers him and his brother sleeping in the back of the van when his father George towed the Gemini rally car to Melbourne for the launch of the Commodore which would of been some time in 1978.

Not sure about the windowless van however the windowed HDT van was definitely a 308 T/Bar.

Heres a link to the Canberra Rally in 1979

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A71UkUpSIw

This vid runs for 50 mins so its pretty lengthy, but its great veiwing, it features mid rally interveiws with Colin Bond and George Fury, worth sittting through if you have an hour over a beer to spare. The Marlborogh Geminis were in this rally, and various assumedly service vehicles for different teams are briefly visible at some points

In terms of service vehicles, there is a White HJ wagon visible in the 'service area' about 5 or 6 mins in, and the tail end of an H series van at 12:51. Its 1979, so if the ebay ad is correct, does that mean two service vehicles should be there? (Not that they would neccecarily be on film of course).. but, they seem to have filmed a fair bit of the event, anyway its a cool segment, so i posted it.
