Hi i think i own the panel van that your talking about. I am chasing any info or pics of the vans that could help me prove if it is or is not a HTD van. At the end of the day i got it for what it is a factory 308 matching number windowless van.
Two Vans and Plane.jpgHDT 007.jpg
There where 4 vans and the prototype Commodore plus light plane used for the Repco Trial to support the 3 cars.
1st van was NSW Rego # JZA225. This had the full Marlboro signage with 4 x side windows. This was George Shepheard's "work van". It was a Sandman according to George Shepheard and was the van that the rally team used for the Australian Championship Rally rounds as a service vehicle. It was a 308 auto with centre console. The rally team mechanic who I have spoken too about this van recalls most vividly that it was equipped with a center console as ended up straddling the console on one trip to Queensland! This van was painted in Castrol colours in 1980 when HDT ran two Castrol backed twin cam Gemini sedans for Wayne Bell and Barry Ferguson. This is the van I am replicating. I have the rego plates in storage at the RMS as we speak.
2nd van was owned by John Sheppard of the HDT race team and based in Melbourne. Vic rego ACF 706. It has the red and white Marlboro paint job but has different minor sponsors. It was windowless and appears to be a Kingswood as you can see the badge on the front guard. This van hit a horse in outback Queensland and that was the end of it. Bev Brock makes memtion of this in her book. The rally team mechanic thinks that this van was left on the side of the road and when someone went to get it it had been burnt out.
Vans 3 and 4 appear to be plain jane white vans. George could not remember there spec. The rego's where KGB692 and KGB693 (NSW rego). They where lent to the team to the for the trial and returned upon the completion of the event. These vans roof racks and bullbars of similar spec to JZA.
In terms of the 3 Commodores only 2 still exist. The 05 Brock/Phillip/Richards car is sitting in the meseum at Bathurst and the 17 Bell/Ferguson/Boddy 2nd place car is now owned by Barry Ferguson (one of the orginal driver's from the trial) and was restored in 2007-2008. The 3rd Commodore Mehta/Aaltonen/Lake was destroyed sometime in the 80's.
Thank you so much for all the info! One of the registration you gave me matches the original registration of my panel van,
Don't suppose you live in vic would love to have chat abuot the vans
